Stamped Concrete- Does it Deliver?

Renovating your home should be an exciting opportunity to transform your current space into one that you absolutely love! However, this process is often more stressful than initially thought. In the big picture, the idea may seem simple. In reality, once you take a look at how many things actually go into a home renovation, the list is endless. Tasks are added on and projects that you wouldn't even consider, now seem necessary in order to get your space looking exactly how you want it.

With summer fast approaching, you want your backyard in the best shape possible. I feel the exact same way! Barbeques, pool days, and sunbathing are all essential to have a fantastic summer in my book! And where does this all take place?  That’s right- your backyard.

Because you’ve been cooped up all winter long, I’m sure the necessity for beautiful, outdoor concrete was not your first priority in mind. Although, when you stop and think about how much a floor surface can really affect the beauty of a backyard, it truly has the potential to change your entire landscape!

What are my options? How do I make my backyard look GREAT again?

It’s actually quite crazy how many different options you have to choose from when it comes to transforming your outdoor concrete. You could potentially:

  • Paint a pattern
  • Lay decking
  • Stain it
  • Have your concrete stamped
  • Coat your concrete (that's where Webfoot comes in!)

While these are all okay options, I notice a definite interest in the look of stamped concrete. A common question I get is if we install, coat, or restain stamped concrete. Stamped concrete is “concrete that is patterned and/or textured or embossed to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and various other patterns and textures.”  Here’s an example of a common style of stamped concrete:

Here’s how it works: A concrete pouring company pours the concrete. While it is still wet, a stamping company uses a stamp design to imprint the concrete. Seems simple enough right?

While stamped concrete has the potential to add a unique look to your outdoor spaces, it also comes with many drawbacks.

Let’s take a look:

  • It cracks easily- its durability is very low
  • You have to reseal it every couple of years
  • It can be extremely expensive
  • Does not have UV protection
  • The color durability is low. This means that if there is chipping, the existing concrete underneath will show through.

And possibly the most important reason of all: it is very difficult and expensive to do anything with stamped concrete in the future. If you decide to go with stamped concrete, your options are extremely limited to change this later on!

While our Webfoot crews would love to help turn every single patio/outdoor area into a space you would love, we can not work with stamped concrete. The grinder our crews use is not built to grind concrete down to its bare surface. Not to mention, how expensive it would be to you to have a project like this completed.

Why is it so difficult to deal with stamped concrete?

Aside from the downsides listed above as to why we don’t recommend getting your concrete stamped, if it is installed improperly, the financial burden can be extensive! It’s incredibly challenging to go back and fix stamped concrete, and looks horrible if it is not done correctly.

Now that we’ve established why stamping your concrete may not be the best option, let’s dive into what Webfoot can do for you with your outdoor space!

Why should I call Webfoot?

Don’t get me wrong, stamped concrete can look cool. The earthy textures and tones can add to the natural look that is extremely appealing!
